The 111-day Soorya Festival begins today

The 111-day Soorya Festival being conducted as part of the 32nd anniversary of Soorya will be held from Monday, and will be on till  January 10, 2010. Soorya president Gopalakrishna Pillai and general secretary Soorya Krishnamoorthy said that over 1,500 artists from various parts of the country would be participating in the festival. This year’s Soorya Festival has been included in the Incredible India festival of the Tourism Department of the Government of India. Dr Jawahar Sarkar, Cultural Secretary of the Government of India, will inaugurate the festival at Tagore Theatre here at 6.45 p.m. on Monday. As part of the inaugural, the Samudra dance troupe will present ‘Ganeshasthuti’. Following this, the Soorya film festival to be held up to September 30 will be inaugurated. ‘Bhramaram’ is the inaugural film.

'Mahendra jaalam' by Rajeevnath

After 'Pakal Nakshathrangal' Anoop Menon is writing screenplay for the film 'Mahendra jaalam' directed by Rajeevnath.  It is for the first time Rajeevnath is directing a commercial movie.

Mamooty in Raavu Maayumbol

After Ranjit's 'Paleri Maanikam' Mamootty is scheduled to do his next project `Raavu Maayumbol' also. Mamootty's Play House will produce the film. More details are yet to come.

Mohanlal got Sri Chithira Thirunal Trust award

Superstar Mohanlal has been selected for the Sri Chithira Thirunal award for 2009, instituted by Sri Chithira Thirunal Trust, formed in memory of the former Maharaja of the erstwhile Travancore Sri Chithira Tirunal. The award includes a cash prize of Rs. 10,00,000 and a plaque. The award, instituted in 2006, honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions in fields such as science, technology, literature, art, medicine, cinema and education. Mohanlal  was considered for the award for his contributions to Cinema and Theatre.

Kelkunnundo by Geethu Mohandas

`Kelkunnundo?', a short film, the directorial venture of actress Geethu Mohan Das, which exceeds 22 minutes was screened on Sunday at Prasad Lab in Kazhakoottam KINFRA park, near Thiruvananthapuram. Adoor Goplakrishan, Syama Prasad, Rajeev Nath, Lenin Rajendran and Madhu Pal and others watched the preview of the film.  It is the story about a blind girl  Asna, who has no colours in her world. The director is trying to colourise her mind with hope. Geethu  said, she has developed this film from one of her short stories.

A documentary on the life of Vagbhatananda

A documentary on the life of Vagbhatananda, who was among those who started social renaissance in the Kerala, was released by social critic Sukumar Azhikode at the Atmavidya Sanghom at Azhikode, Kannur on Sunday.Vagbhatananda's childhood, struggle against the caste system, his marriage and his involvement in the freedom struggle have been presented in the film, directed by P.K. Tamil-Malayalam film actor Bala exchanged engagement ring on Monday morning  with Asianet star singer 2007 fame Amritha Suresh in a function at Taj Earth Hotel in Nedumbassery near Ernakulam. Other than the close relatives of both Bala and Amritha, director Roshan Andrews, actor Sanker, producer Jagadeesh Chandran and Radhika, wife of actor Suresh Gopi attended the function. Amritha  hails from Idappally near Ernakulam.  Bala is a Tamilian and started his career  by acting in Tamil films. Now he is more  engaged in Malayalam films.

International film festival begins on December 11 @ Trivandrum

Kerala State Chalachitra Academy's 14th Thiruvananthapuram International Film Festival (IFFK 2009) will start on December 11.The festival will end on December 18. The main attraction of the festival will be the competition category of Asian, African and Latin American films. Two hundred films from 60 countries will be screened in the categories of World Cinema, Retrospectives of Mrinal Sen, Homages, Films about Che Guevara, Indian Cinema Today and New Malayalam Cinema.

Kavya Madhavan in Maadan Kolli

Popular Malayalam actress Kavya Madhavan, who has been going through a tumultuous phase in her married life (her marriage with Nishal Chandra is on the rocks), has reportedly signed a horror film titled Maadan Kolli (Ghost Buster) to be directed by Army officer-turned filmmaker Major Ravi, known for his war movies Keerthichakra, Mission 90 Days and Kurukshetra.

Actor Mukesh has become a novelist. The novel `Mukesh Babu and Party in Dubai', the second book written by him was released by actor Sreenivasan at a function in Kollam on Friday. The publisher DC Books, placed it in the category of `realistic campus novel'. The function was in connection with the Book Fair conducted by DC Books.

'Pazhhassi Raja' to hit 525 screens on Ramazan

Hariharan's magnum opus 'Pazhassi Raja' would have a global release on Ramzan, when the film would be simultaneously released in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on 525 screens across the world.The film is believed to be the costliest ever production in the history of Malayalam cinema with the budget having exceeded a staggering twenty six crores. Veteran script writer M T Vasudevan Nair who has penned the script, has relied on several authentic resources including the Malabar Manual for reliable facts that made up the brave warrior's life.The rerecording done by musical maestro Illayaraja has the Hungarian symphony lending that magical touch to the whole affair.

Mohanlal again in police role

Shaji Kailas is once again gearing up to create another super human police officer character for Mohanlal. He has already signed the Onam project of Mohanlal for the year 2010. The movie titled as ‘Raman Police’ will be scripted by A K Saajan. Interestingly Mohanlal was in a police role last time, in the movie ‘Baba Kalayani’ which was also directed by Shaji Kailas.

Onam Mega celebration

More than 4000 artists will be participating in the week-long Onam celebrations beginning in the capital on Tuesday. About 125 performances ranging from classical dances and music, to folk arts and martial arts will be staged at 16 venues across the city during the week. Folk artists participating in the fair will number more than 1200.

Malayalam film director Anwar Rasheed and his mother were attacked

Two days after Kerala high court warned the government against “goonda raj”, Malayalam film director Anwar Rasheed and his mother were attacked and injured at home.Police said the attack by a group who trespassed into the compound of his house took place at around 11pm on Sunday. Mother and the son were admitted to hospital and are recovering from the shock.
